When exercising even at low intensities for extended durations, members frequently produce significant amounts of heat and sweat. It is often therefore more comfortable to train topless for both men and women (wearing a sports bra), and many members prefer to do so.

There is no specific guidance on the issue of clothing in the British Rowing Safeguarding Handbook, or its Safeguarding Young People Policy. However, there are general principles in place about ensuring professional boundaries between adults and young people.

Policy

It is permissible for members to take their top off while they are training when using a static bike or ergo, either indoors or on the balcony.

Once Members have completed their training effort, they should put their top back on. Members should not move about the boathouse without wearing a top, including when transiting to the toilets and to the changing rooms.

The Hall is a multi-use space and serves as access from the bar to the toilets for members of the public. Members should only take their top off to train in place on an ergo or a bike and should replace their top after their effort is completed. Members should be considerate of the feelings of other members in the Hall.

Members should not row outdoors on the river Lea or at the docks without a top on.

During periods reserved for the Jewish Women or Schools on the timetable, members should always wear a top, even if areas appear to not be in use by others.

Considerations with juniors

The above approach applies equally to adults and juniors. There is no prohibition specific to juniors against taking their top off to train if that is their preference, provided it complies with the rules set out above.

However, given the overriding principle to ensure that there are professional boundaries in place between coaches and juniors, a coach may stipulate that juniors must wear a top for a given session.

It is the responsibility of a junior coach present for a training session to ensure the juniors under their supervision comply with this clothing policy.

Most junior indoor training takes place at different timetabled periods to those for adults. However, there may be some cross-over periods during the week, particularly at the end of weekday junior training, or when the Docks is closed. The presence of juniors is not in of itself a bar to adults training without a top, however judgment should be applied and consideration given to the views of any junior coaches present. When juniors are present, coaches may ask other members (or members of the public) to leave the training area during the session.
